The framework

Preferment: an alternative to retirement

Last updated:

Preferment is the Rarified Life framework for treating life after career as an ascension rather than an ending, built on your values, meaningful pursuits, learning and physical activity.

Definition

What is Preferment?

Preferment is a research-backed framework, book and live course created by Rarified Life founder Anne van Leynseele. The word means advancement or promotion. Rarified Life uses it to reframe the end of a career as a step up into a chapter you design on purpose, not a step down into one that simply happens to you.

Rarified Life puts the idea plainly: ditch retirement, try Preferment instead. You do not need a five-year plan. You need a structured place to start figuring it out, and a sequence that turns reflection into a routine.

Procedure

The six modules of Preferment

Each module builds on the one before it. The same sequence underpins Rarified Life one-on-one coaching and the eight-week live course.

  1. Introduction

Where you are right now, and why the old model of retirement was never built for someone like you.

  2. Identity

Separating who you are from what you did for a living.

  3. Motivation

Finding what actually moves you, now that a paycheck is not the reason.

  4. Alignment

Matching your values and strengths to how you will actually spend your days.

  5. Accountability

Building the structure that turns intention into a lived routine.

  6. Launch

Naming your mission for this next chapter, and stepping into it.

Comparison

How is Preferment different from conventional retirement?

Conventional retirement treats the last day of work as a finish line. Preferment, as Rarified Life presents it, treats it as a launch point with its own mission.

The four themes Preferment emphasizes

Rarified Life describes the approach as emphasizing personal values, meaningful pursuits, learning and physical activity. Each one replaces something work used to provide. Values replace the external scorecard of promotions and reviews. Meaningful pursuits replace the sense of contribution. Learning replaces the stretch of new challenges. Physical activity protects the energy, health and relationships that everything else depends on.

The framework also leans on the idea of being rather than only doing. One participant quoted on rarifiedlife.com said she thought work defined her, then discovered she was much more, and learned to "be" rather than just "do" on autopilot.

How to work through Preferment

Rarified Life offers the framework two ways. One-on-one retirement coaching is the recommended first step, because it adapts the modules to your timing and situation. The Preferment live course works through the book chapter by chapter over eight weeks. For an overview of both, return to the Rarified Life retirement coach page.

Common questions

What is Preferment?

Preferment is the Rarified Life framework, book and course for people who are done treating retirement as an ending. The word means advancement or promotion, and the approach treats life after career as an ascension. It moves through six modules: Introduction, Identity, Motivation, Alignment, Accountability and Launch, ending with a named mission for your next chapter.

What are the six modules of Preferment?

The six Preferment modules are Introduction, where you assess where you are now; Identity, separating who you are from your job; Motivation, finding what moves you without a paycheck; Alignment, matching values and strengths to your days; Accountability, building structure that turns intention into routine; and Launch, naming your mission and stepping into it.

Is the Preferment framework research-backed?

Rarified Life describes Preferment as a research-backed framework that emphasizes personal values, meaningful pursuits, learning and physical activity. Those themes match concerns raised in published work on retirement adjustment, such as the depression figures summarized by lifecoachingcertification.net. For the specific research behind the framework, see the Preferment book itself.

How is Preferment different from conventional retirement?

Conventional retirement treats the end of a career as the finish line. Preferment treats it as an ascension: a deliberate move into a new chapter built on your values, meaningful pursuits, learning and physical activity. Rarified Life presents it as an alternative to retirement, captured in its own line: "Ditch retirement... try Preferment instead."

Can I plan my retirement life on my own instead?

You can, and books, journaling and workshops help. The common gap is accountability: intentions fade without structure. The Preferment framework gives accountability a whole module, and Rarified Life coaching adds a person who checks your progress. If you prefer to start independently, the free presentation and the readiness quiz on this site are low-commitment first steps.

Is the Preferment book available on its own?

The Preferment book is included with the live course as your companion text and workbook. The Rarified Life store lists books as coming soon, so check rarifiedlife.com for the status of a standalone edition. An excerpt from Chapter 5, Embracing the Currents of Change, uses water as a metaphor for persistence, adaptation and personal growth.
